A quick note on video structure…videos are edited to include only key and legitimate prospects. Time between pitches and between innings are edited out. Some commercials are left in out of respect for the companies that purchase ad buys.

I use time markers for when a particular hitter comes up to bat or a certain pitcher enters the game so you don’t have to shuffle through the video looking for key players. Games are edited so you can scout and evaluate a prospect in the most convenient and quickest way possible.

Martin Perez is a pitching prospect in the Texas Rangers organization and one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. I rated him as the 10th best prospect in baseball and gave him an A- grade.

This was far from Martin Perez’ best outing. He had to battle and he had to grind through this one, which he did pretty admirably. His final line: 5 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 3 W, 4 K, 0 HR, 4 GB, 4 FO

What was missing from Perez’ repertoire and how did he get through this outing mostly unscathed? You’ll have to read on to find out…

    Alex,

Great write up, is his change still grade out as plus? Also on a side note (seem to leave one with every comment sorry) What am I missing about Robles with the Mariners? His numbers seem solid across the board (k/9, k/bb and Gb%) plus he is young. Is it just his stature? I have read every write up I can find including yours. But the numbers and the write ups just seem to not make sense. Any insight would be awesome.

    All the best,

Perez didn’t throw but one or two in this particular game, but I haven’t seen anything to suggest his change-up has regressed this year. This was the worst I’ve seen his curveball, however…but I’ve seen enough of him in the past to know this game was an anomaly in that regard.

As far as Robles, a lot of what I had off of him was based on numbers/secondary reports since I only had very small snippets of footage of him. I’ve never concerned myself with stature too much…all things being equal, you prefer the bigger body. But what does come into play is that because of his size, he doesn’t offer a lot of projection. I believe the big issues with Robles is his control, which is about where it was last year and the lack of a quality breaking ball. Many think he’ll end up in the bullpen, which lowers his value. He’s a sleeper though and probably underrated — I looked around and didn’t see anybody who rated him better than 13th (which is where he ended up on my list). I do hope to see him more extensively this year to get a better idea of his ability.
