Grades are based on a prospect’s projected value over the course of his career and how likely it is that prospect will fulfill his projected value. Various factors are accounted for including upside, red flags, actual performance, and closeness to the majors. See the 2012 Top Prospect List Primer for more information as it relates to prospect grading and philosophy. Grades can be subject to change.

Prospect Quick Takes

    1. Addison Reed | RHP | Age – 23 | Grade – BClick here for a pitch-by-pitch breakdown on Reed
    2. Trayce Thompson | OF | Age – 21 | Grade – B- … Raw, but still with lots of upside.
    3. Nestor Molina | RHP | Age – 23 | Grade – B- … Doesn’t have outstanding stuff, but he pounds the strike zone…potential middle of the rotation strater
    4. Tyler Saladino | SS | Age – 22 | Grade – B- … Shortstop has some solid pop and showed improvement as last year wore on.
    5. Simon Castro | RHP | Age – 24 | Grade – B-/C+ … Former Padre prospect looking to bounce back after a poor 2011 season.
    6. Jake Petricka | RHP | Age – 22 | Grade – B-/C+ … Right hander might be a better fit in relief. See his full report on Page 2
    7. Keenyn Walker | OF | Age – 21 | Grade – C+ … Very athletic and toolsy, but also still quite raw.
    8. Jhan Marinez | RHP | Age – 23 | Grade – C+ … Has an electric fastball. Question is whether he can throw enough strikes.
    9. Hector Santiago | LHP | Age – 24 | Grade – C+ … Power arm lefty looks like a potential fit out of the bullpen.
    10. Erik Johnson | RHP | Age – 22 | Grade – C+ … Last year’s second round pick needs to throw more strikes if he’s to remain in the rotation.
    11. Jared Mitchell | OF | Age – 23 | Grade – C+ … Looking to bounce back after very difficult first year back from an ankle injury that kept him out all of 2010.
    12. Pedro Hernandez | LHP | Age – 23 | Grade – C+ … Lefty throws strikes, but may not have the repertoire to stay a starter.
    13. Eduardo Escobar | SS | Age – 23 | Grade – C+ … Plus defensive shortstop that will struggle to hit enough to play everyday.
    14. Greg Infante | RHP | Age – 23 | Grade – C+ … Potential middle reliever or set up man at best.
    15. Ozzie Martinez | SS | Age – 23 | Grade – C+ … Potential utility fielder.
    16. Myles Jaye | RHP | Age – 20 | Grade – C+ … Young pitcher has nice projection, but is a ways off.

    18. Jeff Soptic | RHP | Age – 21 | Grade – C+ … Third round pick from last year has excellent fastball velocity. Will need more consistency.

Best Case Outcome – I’d love to see if Reed has what it takes to start, where his best case upside would be somewhere in the range of a strong No. 3 or decent No. 2 starter, but that is not the direction Chicago is planning to go. Coming out of the bullpen, he can still make a few All Star games as a dominant closer.

More Likely Outcome – Top-10 closer at the big league level.

    2. Trayce Thompson | OF | B – R | Age – 21
    Low-A Kannapolis | Drafted – Round 2 (61), 2009
