Florida Marlins Farm System Overview – 2010
Overview
The Florida Marlins usually have a deep system they draw upon for talent, but that isn’t the case this year. They are extremely strong at the top with Mike Stanton and Logan Morrison, along with Chad James, who has yet to throw a professional pitch, but has a ton of potential. After James, you have Matt Dominguez and Gaby Sanchez, who are good, but flawed prospects.
Once you get past Sanchez, I think the system takes a steep drop off. You’re left with a lot of hard throwers with command issues, most of whom project to be in the bullpen, a lot of limited upside utility type players, and some intriguing but really far off positional talent.
It seems the Marlins are a little short on quality pitching prospects though you could make the same case for the position prospects after their initial top-5. Florida took pitchers with three of their first four picks in 2009, but were much more balanced the rest of the way. This came after a draft in 2008 in which they went pitching heavy. However, many of the pitchers they chose were of the low upside variety.
But we also need to be fair. The Marlins have graduated a lot of talent recently and some of that talent has been impact talent. So while their farm system isn’t as deep now, they deserve time to restock the system.
