Futures Game Quick Hit: Kyle Drabek
I’ll do a couple of these quick hits, but I want to start with Kyle Drabek first.
I was reading a thread over at Phuture Phillies about the Futures Game and came across a Futures Game recap by ESPN’s Keith Law (Insider subscription required).
Law had this to say about Drabek:
Drabek, son of former major leaguer Doug Drabek, was 91-93 with a hard curveball at 79-80 that had a slider-esque horizontal break. His delivery is still rough, with some head violence at the end, and he commanded his fastball to his glove side but less so to his arm side. Drabek’s name has come up as the potential anchor of a stretch-drive trade for the Phillies, but he’s not that kind of impact talent — just a very good pitching prospect with a chance for two above-average pitches.
I don’t really have much too quibble with here…I agree he’s probably not an impact talent and I tend to agree with Law more often than not, but one point of contention I have is the part I bolded above. I don’t see his delivery as rough even though it was at one point — which you can see in my scouting report on Drabek — I also didn’t notice much head violence at the end. I’ve gone back and looked at the video multiple times and still don’t see much violence. Sometimes people see different things.
