Philadelphia Phillies Farm System Overview – 2010
Overview
Despite trading for two Ace-caliber pitchers, the Phillies managed to hold on to their number prospect Domonic Brown. However, it did mean unloading the bulk of last year’s top prospects to new teams.
Despite this, the Phillies had accumulated enough depth in their farm system so that the cupboard wouldn’t be bare when all the smoke cleared. The Phillies did manage to get back some of the depth they lost over the last year by trading Cliff Lee to Seattle.
What the Phillies are now left with are some big, but high risk arms in the lower levels of their minor league system — arms such as Trevor Mays, Jarred Cosart, and 2009 draft pick Brody Colvin — and numerous plus level athletes with baseball skills that need development.
The Phillies draft philosophy in recent years has been to target the premium athletes mentioned above. It’s not an approach I would endorse — too much risk involved — but it did pay off with Domonic Brown’s emergence.
Right now, the Phillies system has one elite level prospects and a lot of depth, but few “good” prospects. The team’s depth comes from a bunch of boom-or-bust players. While that leads to many flameouts, you also have a system with a lot of sleepers for next year.
