Miles Head | 1b | Oakland Athletics (A+)

Acquired from Boston in exchange for closer Austin Bailey, Miles Head added some muscle to Oakland’s farm system.

Head has a strong, mature build and doesn’t offer any physical projection, but he does have now-power thanks to good bat speed and excellent hand-eye coordination. While he’s not just a mistake hitter, he does a great job of jumping on the mistakes of pitchers. He recognizes them early and doesn’t miss often.

Head is an aggressive hitter that pitchers can take advantage of. He’s still learning to lay off breaking balls in the dirt and he’s susceptible to chasing high fastballs out of the strike zone. That said, his contact rate is pretty solid for a power hitter. If he can be a little more patient, work the walk, and get on base at a higher rate, he’d improve his prospect status. His biggest obstacle is that he’s a first base only player, so his bat must carry him. However, he’s got a pretty good glove at first base, with terrific hands and somebody who picks the short hop extremely well. He’s not as good as his numbers suggest this year (hitter friendly park/league, unsustainable BABIP), but he’s a legit prospect and a potential everyday player at the big league level.
