Swing Overhaul: the Adjustments of Chris Coghlan
Today I bring you an article I wrote for Baseball Digest Daily on the adjustments made by Florida Marlins second base prospect Chris Coghlan. The adjustments were made after a very ominous start to his professional career where he struggled mightily. Because of these changes, Coghlan was able to generate more power from his bat, which combined to go very well with his already advanced plate discipline. An excerpt:
Comparing Coghlan’s draft swing to his swing of 2007 — while the angle is obviously different — there are still noticeable differences…he has a little more bend in the knees and a slightly more open stance. Gone is his knee twist, and a more traditional and aggressive foot plant and hip turn is in place…unfortunately, we can’t see how he shifts his momentum forward, but we can see how much more aggressive his hip turn is.
Coghlan’s swing plane also changed last year as he now has more loft, which will lead to more fly balls and homeruns. This change (as well as his others), show up in the numbers as explained below:
