Overview

It was kind of an up-and-down year for Seattle’s farm system. They were hit by injuries to Carlos Triunfel, Dennis Raben, Michael Pineda, and Jharmidy De Jesus and traded what were three potential top-10 prospects (Phillippe Aumont, Juan Ramirez, Tyson Gillies) for Cliff Lee, which was a very good price considering the pitcher.

The Mariners had their share of busts (Greg Halman immediately comes to mind), but they had a couple breakout years (Gillies, Alex Liddi) and they graduated Michael Saunders (by the criteria I use, he’s not a prospect) and Shawn Kelley (looking like a legit set up man) to the big league club.

While they brought in what is basically a consensus top-50 prospect in center fielder Dustin Ackley with their 2nd pick in last year’s draft, there is a steep drop off after that. What we find is a system littered with low – average upside talents that are close to major league ready, various high risk, toolsy hitters that rack up the strikeouts, hit homeruns, and generate outs, and some legitimate high upside talents that we just have very limited data on. It’s a system full of question marks that we should have more answers to once next season ends.
