Overview

All teams should constantly be looking to stockpile young talent in an effort to create a pipeline of prospects. Ideally, you want to be able to lose a player via free agency and have a top talent ready to fill his place. If a team see’s themselves as one player away, you want to have the option of being able to take three, maybe four prospects and pull the trigger on that trade and still have the stockpile and pipeline in place. It’s a process year-after-year to stockpile young, cheap talent.

The Rangers seem to have it down to a T. They graduated six or seven (correct me if I’m wrong) prospects to the big league level and yet they still have three or four elite prospects waiting in the wings with depth thereafter. You get past that second level of depth and you enter a whirlwind of both talent and the unknown.

Much of the unknown comes from the splurge of talent Texas has acquired down in Latin America, as well as from the pitching depth they have accumulated over their past two drafts.

Texas has been stockpiling talent like no other team in baseball and they are creating a true pipeline of young, cheap talent that they will reap the benefits from for years to come.

For teams that can’t afford to keep up with the Yankees and Red Sox in free agency, they have to level the playing field by stockpiling younger and cheaper talent as well by making shrewder moves and the Rangers seem to be doing that.
