Grades are based on a prospect’s projected value over the course of his career and how likely it is that prospect will fulfill his projected value. Various factors are accounted for including upside, red flags, actual performance, and closeness to the majors. See the 2010 Prospect Primer for more information as it relates to prospect grading and philosophy.
Hitters must have 100 or fewer Major League ABs to qualify for this list. Starting pitchers must have 50 or fewer Major League innings to qualify for this list. Relief pitchers must have 25 or fewer Major League innings to qualify for this list. Ages are listed as of May 1st, 2010. Levels are based on the highest level in which a prospect played in 2009. Final Grade – B-
Body Type – A small, but athletic frame
Stuff
Fastball – Sits between 88 – 92, touching 93 and 94…as he fills out he could add more velocity. Reports are that his velocity will fluctuate at times, dropping to the mid – upper 80′s
Curveball – Needs to be tightened and refined but has average potential
Change-Up – His best pitch, thrown with a lot of velocity for a change-up (85 – 87 mph) and it has a splitter like action
Scouting Report
Henderson Alvarez has a solid all around game and a good feel for pitching especially for his age. He throws strikes, only walking 3.7% of the batters he faced last year. He also improved his command. Alvarez would throw strikes but was much too hittable. Last year, he did a better job of commanding his stuff in places where hitters couldn’t just tee off.
Problem for Alvarez, he doesn’t miss many bats. He does keep the ball on the ground, which helps make up for the lack of strikeouts, but the bottom line is that he doesn’t have overpowering stuff.
Alvarez starts the season in A+ Dunedin.
Best Case Outcome – Borderline No. 3 starter
More Likely Outcome – No. 4 starter

Scouting Report
Carlos Perez is the best defensive catcher in the organization. He picked off 48% of the runners attempting to steal off him thanks excellent pop times and a strong, accurate arm. Like d’Arnaud, Perez must work on blocking balls in the dirt, but a really good sign of his advanced defensive skills was the fact he head zero passed balls in 245 innings of work.
What makes Perez really intriguing is the offensive skills he offers as a catcher. He shows off an advanced approach for his age. He makes consistent, hard contact and seems to understand the importance of working the count and getting on base.
While his approach is more contact oriented at the moment, Perez displayed some pop as well. He doubled his power output from his prior season in the Dominican Summer League. He’s also shown enough strength to lift the ball consistently.
All that being said, Perez upside is not huge. He doesn’t give you a lot of plus tools to work with offensively. In addition, he gets under the ball too much, resulting in a lot of pop-ups. His swing is still a little handsy and doesn’t do much to take advantage of his lower body. Making the needed adjustments would lead to more power production.
Best Case Outcome – Above average everyday catcher
More Likely Outcome – Too soon to say
Brief Rundown on Prospects 8 – 15
8. Jake Marisnick | OF | Grade – B-/C+ – Toolsy and raw outfielder has big upside, but his track record was sketchy as an amateur
9. Brad Mills | LHP | Grade – C+/B- – Potential back of the rotation start that is just about big league ready
10. J.P. Arencibia | C | Grade – C+ – Big time power, but little plate discipline…could be an average everyday catcher, but he’s never going to get on base at a good rate
11. Brad Emaus | 2b/3b | Grade – C+ – Metrics suggest he’s due for a bounce back season
12. Brian Dopirak | 1b | Grade – C+ – Could be a power bat off the bench
13. Eric Thames | OF | Grade – C+ – Like his offensive potential but he needs to stay healthy
14. Ryan Schimpf | 2b | Grade – C+ – Like him as an offensive second baseman…see Schimpf in action against Toronto 2009 draft pick James Paxton
15. David Cooper | 1b | Grade – C+ – Has to produce this year or he’ll be written off as a prospect

Other C+ Prospects
16. Tim Collins | LHP | Age – 20 – Tiny right hander racks up the strikeouts out of the bullpen
17. Moises Sierra | RF | Age – 21 – Somewhat intriguing outfield prospect, but he must show more power if he’s to hold down right field on an everyday basis
